I had a chance to catch up on Seth Godin’s blog last night – sometimes he just nails it. If there’s anyone I’ve been reading lately who has such great insight (for me) it’s Seth. He understands the creative world, and has such a great perspective. I’ve also never known anyone who was able to criticize in such a nice way.
A few weeks ago he wrote about what makes a conference great. Here’s an excerpt that rang so true:
…If there’s vulnerability and openness and connection. If it’s likely you’ll meet someone (or many someones) that will stick with you for years to come, who will share their dreams and their fears while they listen to and understand yours. (At most events, people are on high alert, clenched and protective. Like a cocktail party where no one is drinking.)
Over the last ten years I’ve made some of the best friends I could ever ask for at WPPI. Whether it was at Rouge exchanging high-fives, or sharing stories of grief at the coffee shop in the middle of the night. I hope I can foster that
“vulnerability and openness and connection” this year, and for years to come.
I took this photo at Imaging USA last week. In the middle of the carpet is a small group of photographers who were chatting for hours. Both are IUSA and WPPI are big conferences, but it’s those conversations like the ones these people were having is what makes them great. I wish I could’ve joined them!
