Tech Tuesday: Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 Release Candidate Available

February 25, 2014

New Photoshop CS6 and CC Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 release candidates are currently available for download—That’s the good news.

The bad news is that, as of version 8.4, ACR updates are no longer supported for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OSX 10.6 for CS6 users. Windows 7 and 8, Mac OSX Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks will continue to be available for this and future ACR 8.x updates for CS6.

New camera support included with this release candidate includes the Nikon D4s (you can read more about the highly anticipated camera on our sister site, PDN) as well as the DJI Phantom, Hasselblad H5D-50c and Phase One IQ350, among others. Additionally, the ACR release candidate provides new lens profile support for a number of lenses such as the Zeiss Otus 1.4/56 ZE, NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED and the Sony FE 24-70mm, to name just a few.

Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud users come out the bigger winners in this update, of course. Perhaps one of the best—albeit long overdue—ACR features to grace the Photoshop CC desktop is the new preview system. Rather than clicking the ACR preview box on and off, you can now compare before/after images side-by-side or in split view.

A Pet Eye correction option is now available via the Red Eye tool and a number of local correction tweaks have been implemented. Other updates include the addition of a context menu to the Histogram pane. And, you’ll find Camera Matching color profiles for a long list of Fujifilm X-series cameras as well as some bug fixes.
