Wedding and lifestyle photographer Thierry Joubert (Pretty Days Wedding Photographer), from Biarritz, France, says that when it comes to wedding day reportage, his only obsession is “to tell a story—the place, the time, details, a bird flying in the sky, a light through a curtain, every moment of the day. I want to capture each detail of the day to permit me to tell every past moment and experience.”
In the case of New York-based couple Julia and Pierre’s wedding in La Turballe, France, Joubert shot in Pierre’s family home that Joubert describes as “a unique place in a magical atmosphere where we can feel traces and memories of stories in every room of the house.”
“I love the great outdoors, simple weddings, I love discovering new things, new places. My images revolve around the couples and their unique stories,” Joubert explains of his approach to every wedding he shoots.”I grant a great importance to discussing their lives with them because I think it is so important to know as much about them as possible in order to cover their special day the best I can.”
Joubert, a self proclaimed “Nikonist,” says he’s been using the same brand for 20 years and swears by his 35mm Nikon D3s, as well as his 24, 35 and 85mm lenses, which “follow me everywhere.” For ceremonies he prefers the D700 and a 24mm lens; for cocktail hour and reception his weapon of choice is the 85mm lens.”
As long as he’s catching the light at the end of the day and preserving lovers’ legacies, Joubert is content. Only one dream still eludes him, he says: Shooting a wedding in the U.S.
