As someone for whom “packing light” is an oxymoron, Think Tank Photo’s Production Manager 40 rolling gear case makes my heart skip a beat. Designed to transport (or store) a full complement of lighting gear and accessories, the Production Manager 40 also easily accommodates camera gear.

Like most camera cases, the Production Manager 40 comes with padded, adjustable dividers. The interior is large enough to hold three-to-four flash heads, two-to-three power packs and monoblocks, with zippered pockets for assorted cables and other gear. Of course, if you need less lighting equipment, you can pack camera bodies and lenses as well. An outside zippered is perfect for stowing medium-sized soft boxes, reflectors and other light modifiers, while lightstands and/or tripods are easily attached on both sides of the case.

The Production Manager 40 also comes with an integrated cable and lock to secure the main zipper; other zippers can be locked, too. And, the walls of the case are reinforced to protect gear from bumps and rough handling. Of course, the fabric on the outside is water resistant to keep contents dry.

Measuring case measures 15.7” W x 40” H x 12.6” D (exterior) and is pretty hefty at between 18-22 pounds. But, thanks to custom designed (and replaceable) wheels, the case rolls smoothly. Strategically places hand straps make it easy to lift the case when necessary. There are plenty of other design and practical features as well, which can be seen in photos and on Think Tank Photo’s website. Given the Production Manager 40’s spacious interior and thoughtful design, it’s well worth the investment for anyone who needs to transport a full kit of lighting equipment or any photographer who, like me, just doesn’t know how to pack light.
