Gather West has cultivated this very intimate, San Francisco brand of photography/art that perfectly fits the urban Bay Area landscape. For instance, the brand’s photographer Laurie Wilson doesn’t just shoot weddings, she also has a kitschy reclaimed wooden photo booth and a small collection of paper goods for sale.
Gather West’s photography reflects this artistic, design-inspired approach in the loveliest way—with the wedding of Lacey and Bryan at San Francisco’s waterfront park, Crissy Field, (shot by Wilson) serving as a perfect example.
“Lacey is loving and Bryan makes her laugh, and you can tell he makes her feel special,” Wilson says. “It was sweet to see them interact and the way they take care of each other.”
For equipment, Wilson kept it simple with a Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 7D, and Canon 24-70mm, 50mm and 70-200mm lenses. But that didn’t mean there weren’t challenges…
What is a photographer to do when a groom would (understandably) prefer to visit with out-of-town friends than sit for wedding portraits?
“If I didn’t get to do the portrait session, I knew they would not have been happy with the photos; it’s not every day you spend money on a photographer,” Wilson says. “I feel like the portrait session is where folks get the most bang for their buck. I told the groom that it wouldn’t take very long (but I was going to try to get as many minutes as I could), and that it was important to Lacey. Good thing some family was near and also said, ‘Yes, you guys should definitely go do photos!’ Bryan gave me the stink eye for a couple photos, then he was awesome to photograph and he made it more fun for Lacey, too.”
