From India With Love—Petar Jurica Photography [RF Wedding of the Week]

February 13, 2015

By Laura Brauer

An email arrived earlier this week from Croatia, and while I’m never sure what I’m going to find when I click on a link, Petar Jurica‘s documentary style with flawless composition and taste had me muttering “damn, this guy is good,” over my Joni Mitchell playlist.

Jurica has an editorial background, working for most of his career as a newspaper photographer and only began shooting weddings full-time last year. His photojournalism skills show through and through in this wedding of Pete (from Scotland) and Menuo, from Dimapur, in the Nagaland state of India where the ceremony took place.

Getting to Nagaland was no easy feat, though, Jurica says: “I had to take vaccine shots and anti-malaria pills — not my usual preparations for a wedding day. But when after two days of travel I reached the Northeast part of India, I was blown away by its beauty.”

Jurica says the couple met while studying in Edinburg, and “despite the long distance, they manage to have a beautiful relationship.”

Jurica says the bride, Menuo, is “really fond of fashion photography, so for her it was an important part of the wedding.”

To capture the event, Jurica relied on his Domke F2 gear bag: “I love to travel light, especially for big distances like this one.”

In the bag were two Canon EOS5 Mark IIIs, his favorite lens—the Sigma Art 35mm (“I shoot 80 percent of the time with this lens,” he says)—the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L (for location and venue shoots), Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L (for portraits) and Canon 85mm f/1.8 (for ceremony shoots), as well as a Canon 600 EX-RT flash.

The reception hosted about 2,000 guests, according to the photographer

“I love to shoot in new places that inspire me in a strange way,” Jurica says, “and India is for sure one of those magical spots.”
