This Backpack is Hard and Hands-Free—A Beautiful Combination [Tech Tuesday]

Hard cases are great for protecting gear from being tossed around by baggage handlers, sheltering it from storms, accidental trips overboard or— if you’re really adventurous—fording rivers.

But even when hard cases are equipped with wheels, there are plenty of times when you have to lug them up and down subway stairs or through rugged terrain. They’re heavy and cumbersome, which is why I did a double-take when I saw this cool backpack harness at CES.

Designed for waterproof Explorer Cases, the optional Backpack Carrying System fits neatly over the case so you can easily carry it on your back, freeing up your hands to carry other gear. The system is constructed of tear-resistant polyester and features adjustable padded shoulder straps and belt for comfort and a secure fit.  A small pocket for those keep-’em-handy accessories proves essential.

The black Backpack Carrying System is available in two sizes. “L” works with Explorer cases 3317W, 3818, 4412, 4419 and 4820; “M” fits cases 3317 and 5117 and are priced at $40 and $37, respectively and will be sold in the U.S. soon, so keep an eye out for them.

Made in Italy from Copolymer Polypropylene, these Explorer Cases are built to withstand the roughest conditions—from sub-zero cold to desert heat. They’re sealed against the elements, are waterproof, have a purge valve and are extremely sturdy.

Most models are available in a trio of colors: black, orange or green, and with or without foam. Explorer Cases that work with the Backpack Carrying System start at $83 (with foam insert).
