The first hints of spring already have me forward-thinking to summer—weekend trips, canoes and nature walks.
That’s where Joe Grant comes in, with his colorful upstate New York weddings, showing off the woodsy landscapes of Saratoga, Albany and Lake George (still a novel concept for a Floridian like me who didn’t grow up with this kind of color palette).
Exhibit A: Charlotte and Devin’s Great Camp Sagamore wedding in the Adirondack mountains.
“Charlotte and Devin were so much fun to work with and they were really up for anything when it came to photography for their engagement session and wedding day,” Grant says. “The family was so caring and so loving, and that love really carried through in their wedding photos.”
Grant says, as is the case with many mid-day weddings, the sun beaming with very little cloud coverage presented a slight problem for him during the day.
“To overcome the harsh lighting and shadows, I looked for open shade locations, placed my couple between myself and the sun, and when necessary used a large diffuser to soften the light,” he says.
Grant didn’t skimp on gear to capture the day’s events, relying on:
- Two Canon 5D Mark IIIs
- Lenses—70-200mm IS f/2.8, 100mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.2, 50mm f/1.2, 35mm f/1.4 and 24-70mm II f/2.8
- Six Canon 600 EX-RTs
- An Ice Light
- A GL-1
- Miscellaneous reflectors and diffusers
- and a Fuji XT-1 with 86mm f/1.2 and 23mm f/1.4 lenses
