It seems nothing is future-proof when it comes to technology, especially when Apple announces a new MacBook that features a reversible USB-C port.
I won’t get into what I think of a laptop that features only a single port for charging and connecting external devices or having to purchase an adapter to make everything work. And, do I really care if the USB plug is reversible? Frankly, having to look at the cable in order to make sure it plugs in correctly isn’t reason enough to make a switch to USB-C….at least not yet. Of course, buying an adapter for the USB-C is a small change compared to the price tag on the Apple Watch (but that’s a whole other rant).
Fortunately, LaCie came to the rescue this morning with its new USB-C Porsche Design Mobile hard drive. It’s slim, beautiful and comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB models. Better yet, LaCie bundles both a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB Type-A adapter cable with the drive, so it’s backward compatible with current Mac and Windows computers.
The Porsche Design Mobile hard drive is Time Machine compatible and provides speedy image transfer, with estimated interface transfer rates of up to 5Gb/s (USB 3.0) and up to 480 Mb/s (USB 2.0). A 3mm thick aluminum case provides protection for the hard drive and adds to its sleek form factor.
Large capacity models (1TB, 2TB) are slightly larger at 3 x 5.1 x 0.6 inches and weigh 8.5 ounces, but are still highly portable. The 500GB version measures 3.1 x 5 x 0.4 inches and weighs 6.4 ounces. LaCie also includes a full software suite for managing the drive.
The drives are slated for release in the second quarter of this year. Prices haven’t yet been set so keep an eye on the LaCie site for pricing and availability.
