It’s been a long winter for those of us who don’t enjoy sun and moderate temperatures year-round and Think Tank Photo’s new Urban Approach shoulder bags are the perfect antidote for bouts with cabin fever. They won’t be available until April, but by then, the weather should be perfect for getting outdoors.

Designed for mirrorless camera systems, the Urban Approach is available in two versions.  (with lens attached, along with 1-3 additional lenses and an 8-inch tablet for the smaller of the two,  the Urban Approach 5. If you prefer the versatility of carrying up to four additional lenses for your compact system camera and a 10-inch table, check out the Urban Approach 10. The bags are large enough to fit a compact DSLR and lenses instead of a mirrorless system. Here are some example combinations from Think Tank Photo:

  • Urban Approach 5: Fuji X–T1 with 18–55 f2.8–4 attached, 14mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.4, and up to an iPad mini. Also holds Canon Rebel t5i with 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 attached, 55–250mm f/4–5.6, 50mm f/1.8 and up to an 8-inch tablet.
  • Urban Approach 10: Sony a7r with 24–70mm f/4 attached, 70–200 f/4, 55mm f/1.8, 35mm f/2.8, and up to a 10-inch tablet. Also holds a Canon Rebel t5i with 24–70mm f/4 attached, 70-200m m f/4, 16–35mm f/4, and up to a 10-inch tablet

As expected, the interior is well-padded and can be configured for your gear-of-the-day; you can even stack smaller lens with the supplied dividers. A single padded interior slot with a small velcro tab, keeps your tablet neatly and securely in place. Unzip the front main compartment to reveal lots of pockets for everything from pens, keys and other assorted necessities.

If you’re caught in an unexpected April shower, no worries—just use the included seam-sealed rain cover to cover the bag. Equipped with a padded, non-slip shoulder strap for comfort, the Urban Approach also comes with a detachable carry handle.  Slip a water bottle or even a flash in one of the side pockets and slide those need-quick-access-to papers or a notebook into the rear pocket. And, the secondary Velcro front closures under the bags’ flaps offer a “silent” mode so you won’t disturb the quiet of a museum or wedding ceremony when opening the bag.

Also keep an eye out for Think Tank Photo’s latest accessory—the CF/SD + Battery Wallet. The wallet holds one CF or one SD card plus a spare battery. At 2.4 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches when fully loaded, the wallet will fit easily into your pocket, clip onto a belt or can be tucked away in your camera bag.
