For New York-based wedding and portrait photographer Roxana Puiu, who is also one of the recent winners of Rangefinder‘s X-Rite Facebook Giveaway, color accuracy is a skill that she says she’s still learning to master—and she’s not alone. With an endless number of resources surrounding color management, it can be overwhelming to learn and adapt to the latest technologies (which is why we’ve published articles like this crash course to seamless color by portrait and fashion photographer Jeff Rojas.)

But for Puiu, who has been shooting everything from glamour, fantasy, newborn, wedding and maternity portraits professionally for almost four years, she is eager to continue learning and honing her craft. In fact, she was introduced to most of her favorite photographers—Sue Bryce, Lindsay Adler, Joey Lawrence, Lara Jade and Brooke Shaden (just to name a few)—through various photography-related workshops.

Rangefinder had a chance to interview Puiu recently after congratulating her on winning her giveaway prize: the ColorChecker Passport Photo. For Puiu, the ColorChecker Passport Photo is the first color calibration device she’s ever used in her workflow and now, having successfully used it during a full photo shoot and edit, she says she realizes “that having a color correction device [will] save me so much time and make me feel less stressed during post processing.”

Below are some of the first images Puiu color-corrected using the ColorChecker Passport Photo:

Shot using a Canon 7D with a 50mm 1.4 lens and f/2.5, these images were taken in natural light, which is what Puiu mostly prefers. “I always set my camera to auto white balance. If I need to make adjustments, I will do so during editing.”

Using the ColorChecker was easy,” Puiu says, “and with more practice, I can get even more accurate color. I am very excited to incorporate it in to my workflow!”
