There are ways to elevate your wedding photography with software and gear, but nothing does the trick quite like having a certain closeness with the couple, as evidenced by Joanna and Dylan of The Kitcheners Photography. “This photo in particular means a lot to us simply because we have a strong emotional connection with the [couple],” the Scotland-based duo says.

This allowed for a unique level of access, too. “A true connection with the couple meant that we could get close and capture their day in the most honest way possible without barriers,” say the Kitcheners, honored as 30 Rising Stars in 2015. In fact, the most challenging part of capturing this moment—a first look between the bride and groom in Alsace, France—was not “tearing up behind the camera,” they recall. However, “in emotional moments like this, you only have one chance to get the shot right.” (Captured using a Nikon D750 with a Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens.)
