Think Tank Photo’s Shape Shifter Gets Naked [Tech Tuesday]

August 23, 2016

By Laura Brauer

The first time I saw a colleague with a Think Tank Photo’s Shape Shifter backpack I was immediately jealous. He was able to fit everything he needed (and then some) into one pack while I struggled with a backpack, a shoulder bag and a carry-on bag. Granted, I do have a habit of overpacking, but there was something about the Shape Shifter and it’s ability to adjust to different capacities that really intrigued me.

The original version is one-size-fits-all, which doesn’t lessen the appeal of the pack, but the company just announced a trio of new Shape Shifters that includes the modular design-your-own interior Naked model, as well as one designed to fit a 15-inch laptop and a 2.0 version of its 17-inch laptop model.

All three can be compressed to a depth of as little as 3 inches but can expand to fit a whole lot of gear, including a gripped pro DSLR (or two un-gripped), three to four detached lenses, a laptop, a tablet and assorted accessories, and personal gear. There are plenty of external pockets, a tripod holder, an adjustable sternum strap, a smartphone pocket, a detachable water bottle pouch and all the features we’ve come to expect from Think Tank Photo bags and backpacks. There’s also a sleeve so you can attach it to your rolling bag, too.

The Naked Shape Shifter model can accommodate four to seven modular pouches or lens changers, allowing photographers to customize the interior. You can even configure the interior with a pro speed belt to make it easy to grab your gear and go.

Priced at $250 and $280, respectively, the 15-inch and 17-inch laptop versions are available now; the Naked Shape Shifter is $220 and is slated to ship late August. Meanwhile, the original Shape Shifter has been reduced to $200, which is a great value for a bag that can hold so much.
