Helena & Laurent are a San Francisco-based husband-and-wife team. Complementing one another in their roles as a photography duo, they almost always work together with the very rare exception of, say, the birth of their child. “Helena and I recently had our first son, Theo Tiger Martin, and we planned to take the whole month of September off to recover,” Laurent says. “But, as is life, he didn’t arrive until the very last day of the 42nd week, effectively burning up our time off. After a grueling 63-hour home birth, I went off the very next day to work a double header.”

At the end of the day, after the double header, Laurent shot this frame, an “in-between moment” while he and the newlyweds were traipsing for the sunset at Cavallo Point, a former military base in Sausalito, California, that overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge. Laurent hadn’t scouted the area but as they explored together, this patch of tall grass caught his eye. “The wind was blowing hard off the Pacific and the light was perfectly soft and even,” he says. “Pamela grabbed her own dress (which I always love), and I asked them to walk out and stop in a spot they liked.”

For Laurent, this image means more than what’s visible in the frame. “It reminds me what we’re all capable of when we get pushed past our own limit. With art there is this tendency to back down when things get hard, to go for the safe shot, and I think an image like this happened because I was too tired to even know how to do the safe shot. Creativity comes from that struggle.”
