I was first introduced to New York-based fashion and portrait photographer David Urbanke earlier this year when he was honored as one of PDN’s 30 new and emerging photographers to watch. He has since sent promos of his work, which include assignments for Nike, Esquire, WWDL’OptimumNew York Magazine and more. While his professional career is taking off, he continues to focus on personal work too, like the fall-themed portrait seen here, taken in New York City’s Lower East Side.

“I had been shooting in studios quite a bit lately and was eager to do some personal work outdoors,” Urbanke says.  “Autumn in New York always inspires me to hit the streets.”

This shot was one of the last that Urbanke snapped before the sunset faded out. “I was initially taking images of the model, Sasha, spinning and walking up the road when I noticed the patch of natural light and leaves,” he recalls. “We jumped in for a few quick shots and everything came together better than I could have hoped—the lighting, colors, composition and mood.” While the moment was unplanned, it turned out to be one of his favorite photos of the day. He says, “I like to be spontaneous with my work. It excites me.”
