Interested in 360? Ricoh’s New Theta SC Aims to Make It Easy

There have been a number of 360-degree/VR cameras announced lately, but many have been pricey contraptions geared for more serious immersive filmmakers. Ricoh’s newest Theta—the Theta SC—is a more budget-minded take on its top-of-the-line Theta S.

The $300 Theta SC sports a 14-megapixel image sensor and can take fully spherical stills and full HD/30p video for up to 5 minutes at a clip. It uses a pair of f/2 lenses and is lighter in weight than the Theta S. Like the S, the SC can be used handheld, mounted to a tripod, placed on a flat surface or be operated remotely using a smartphone.

There’s an LED indicator on the front of the camera for a visual cue to camera status. The SC offers 8GB of internal memory, a 1.5 second startup time and native ISO of 100-1600.

Ricoh has also updated its free Theta S app for iOS and Android devices, making it easier to use. The app can be used to preview Theta footage, remotely control the camera and share 360-degree content.

The Ricoh Theta SC is shipping now in several colors including beige, blue, pink and white.
