We featured dancers (and newlyweds) Samantha and Brian on the cover of our July/August Portrait Issue last year, shot by portrait, editorial and adventure photographer Michael George. “They’re two of my best friends and two of my favorite subjects,” he says, and naturally they’ve had multiple photo sessions together, including the one above.

“This is part of a portrait series I am working on with dancers,” George says. “The focus is on light, shadow and the geometry of the city. I wanted to photograph them in the Financial District where I knew there would be harsh lines and a lot of cement.”

Photographed as part of a personal project (he’s about halfway done now and will share it next year), in which George gets to “play and experiment and work with other creative people in what feels like a true collaboration,” the images were meant “to feel mostly black and white, with a vibrant red pop.”

Using the two dancers and the sun, George pulled out his Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-70mm f/2.8 at f/13, 1/640 sec. and ISO 640.

Incidentally, he says, they “tried this shot about six times.” What George refers to as an “outtake” of the day is, actually, just as captivating:
