Third time’s the charm for Maarten de Boer, who recently had the chance to shoot a favorite subject again, actress Lizzy Caplan, this time during the Television Critics Association press tour for her Showtime drama Masters of Sex this past July. “I was shooting a lot of actors throughout the day,” he says, when “time was limited and efficiency was key.”

De Boer had a fan blowing that gave Caplan’s dress some movement. “I began shooting her straight on and leaning against the wall,” he says, before switching up his position to capture a more interesting silhouette from the side. “In the first few frames at this angle she was looking out, completely in profile,” he continues. “It was a quiet and reflective moment. I was really loving the light here, the shadow, the profile, but then she turned to the camera and I got this capture. It really is one of my favorites. I love her posture, the motion and the momentary glance over.”

Shot with a Canon 5Ds, tethered “for its speed and ease,” and a 24-70mm lens at f/4.5 and 1/160 of a second, de Boer built this 8 x 8-foot set (one of three in the space) for the occasion, lit with a Profoto head that bounced hard light off the white space to double as fill. “It’s direct and flattering at the same time.”
