Photography duo Seth and Beth Kerechanin shared some valuable insight in the October issue of Rangefinder about the recent transformation of their wedding photography business. While attending a workshop from WPPI Grand Master Jerry Ghionis, they gleaned the following piece of advice: “To be a better photographer, just be a better person.” For Seth and Beth, that bit of wisdom changed their approach to wedding photography. They began working harder to form close relationships with the wedding parties with the goal of capturing more meaningful moments.

This image is a direct result of applying what they learned. During the wedding of Amy and Jeff, pictured above, “we befriended one of the wedding guests just by opening up a conversation,” Seth says. That guest turned out to be the groom’s nephew, Brandon, and his new found talent just so happened to be fire performance. “Essentially, he uses fire on a spinning rope as part of a dance routine,” Seth says. “To demonstrate, he pulled out his rope and hooked up this brightly colored LED baton [a safer alternative to fire] and we knew we had to use him for a creative photo!”

Seth and Beth utilized an 8-second shutter speed to capture this mesmerizing portrait in which the groom’s nephew performed his spinning-light talent to draw the viewer’s eye to the bride and groom. “Brandon was gleaming in delight and the groom thanked him for giving them a photo they could cherish for life.”
