Here’s What’s New From Adobe [Tech Tuesday]

Get ready—it’s time to start updating your software! There are some new upgrades available from Adobe including the release of Adobe Camera Raw 9.8 as well as new features for Lightroom CC and Lightroom for iOS.

The upgrade coming from ACR 9.8 brings lots of new camera and lens support. Notable among the additional support are Sony’s new cameras: the a99 II, a6500 and the DSC-RX100 Mark V. While only preliminary support is provided for the Olympus E-M1 Mark II (look for our camera review coming in the February issue of Rangefinder), ACR 9.8 also gives you Raw processing for Google Pixel, Hasselblad X1D, Leica TL, Pentax K-70 and others. You’ll also find lens profile support for a variety of lenses, including those from Sigma, Tamron and Zeiss.

If you’re still working in CC, CC 2014, CC 2015 or Photoshop CS6 (or are having issues updating from within CC 2017), pick up the ACR installer here. You’ll need to be running a minimum of Mac OS X 10.8-10.11, Microsoft Windows 7, 8.1 or 10.

Lightroom CC (2015.8)/6.8 users get the same ACR camera and lens profile support updates but also tethered shooting support for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Adobe also promises resolutions for a list of issues including improved support for Canon 5D Mark IV dual pixel raw images, problems with the Point Curve, watermarking opacity in export slideshow and much more.

Lightroom CC subscribers (sorry perpetual LR users) also benefit from a new view mode in the Develop Module. Reference View allows users to place a reference photo side-by-side with an active (editable) image. This makes it easy to compare the two and edit the active image to match the look (white balance, saturation, contrast, etc.) of the reference photo.

Lightroom Mobile for iOS 2.6 (for iPhone and iPad) is now available and you can find all the updates and new features here. Among the updates for LR Mobile for iOS are a new edit interface, information section and a new capture interface with a professional mode, bringing the iOS app up to date with the Android version. Take the app for a spin and see what you think.
