Composites are often associated with fantastical images, creating something that simply cannot be feasibly done in real life, but composites can also be simple and subtle. You might not think it on first sight, but this shot—by Australian photographer Todd Hunter McGaw—is a composite of two frames made separately.

“[They are] individual portraits of the bride (Jacqui) and groom (Jeremy), standing on the same mark,” he says. “The photo of Jacqui is flipped to reverse the direction and turbo-boost the graphic powers of the naturally occurring light (and patterns on the wall).” McGaw shot under a highway overpass, with two bridges close together up above, creating this spotlight-like effect.

(Shot with a Nikon D4S and 24mm f/1.4 lens at f/7.1, 1/5000th of a second and ISO 500.)
