For a recent personal project, photographers Yaneck and Sasha from WASIO Photography pulled out all the stops. Captured in their Chicago studio, this image of Devin, a 3-year-old champion hunting and agility Airedale Terrier, was made using three strobes (one octabox from above and two strip boxes from the sides) and a Gravity backdrop, “to keep a nice, moody feel,” Sasha says.

With the lighting in place and the shoot in progress, the photographers decided to add an extra twist to the scene. “We put a Chicago Bears hat on Devin and thought it would be fun to make her sit up,” Yaneck says. “We only had a couple of seconds to capture this pose, so we were lucky to get this exact moment.” What made the capture even more impressive is that the image was made using a medium-format Pentax 645Z camera that the photographers say “focuses much slower” than most other professional cameras.

Overall, this photo turned out to be one of their favorites from the project. “It was a fun combination of the Bears hat and Devin’s pose, which looks practically like a standing bear. That’s why we titled this photo: ‘What do you mean I am not a bear?’” Plus, the photographers note, Devin is owned by Chicago-based agility trainer Dee Lulik, who also trained their two Weimaraners, Sparkle and KenLee.
