“Curtis and Janine had one of the coolest, out-of-the-box weddings we have ever been a part of,” say Vancouver-based photographers Shari and Mike (who were Rf 30 Rising Stars in 2015). Instead of having family and friends travel to one destination, the couple hit the road and had four weddings in ten days between three Canadian cities—Medicine Hat, Edmonton and Vancouver. When it came time to travel, the photographers say that “it was just the four of us in a Volkswagen Westfalia driving through the Rockies!”

This shot was captured in Edmonton at the Ortona Armory, a venue with a beautiful outdoor courtyard. Recognizing that a shot from high up would give him a great angle, Mike began plotting a way to gain rooftop access. He spoke to the venue coordinator and discovered that the entrance to the roof was through the building’s live-in caretaker’s office. “I approached the caretaker with a really friendly attitude and a stiff drink,” Mike recalls. “Well, lucky for us he was in good spirits and enjoyed bourbon!”

Once on the roof, Mike planted himself (safely) over the edge and waited for “just the right moment to frame them between the bulb lights,” he says.

(Captured using a Canon 5D Mark III and a 35mm f/1.4 lens.)
