“Typically when photographing yogis, the vibe is playful and happy,” says Christy Cassano-Meyer of this shoot for Yoga Pearl, a yoga studio in Portland, Oregon. However, this session was captured on the day following the recent U.S. presidential election “and there was such a heaviness in the air.”

Cassano-Meyer was tasked with shooting all of the teachers in a venue called Union Pine, “which is rustic and typically rented for weddings or other events,” she notes. “I’ve shot here before, and I love how beautiful the window light is throughout the space.” Pictured here is Karen, the owner of Yoga Pearl, who only had time for a short session. “I’m not exactly sure how we arrived at this photograph,” Cassano-Meyer recalls, “but we were working through a few yoga poses on the ground and she moved into this simple posture. I stood over her and snapped the photo, and it truly captured the mood that every single person conveyed that day.”

(Shot with a Canon 6D and 35mm lens at f/1.4, 1/750th of a second and ISO 640.)
