Nikon Banks on Bluetooth with New D5600 DSLR

Nikon hit CES 2017 with a new (for the U.S.) DSLR and a pair of compact cameras.

The 24-megapixel D5600 is a DX format DSLR initially launched in Europe last year. It will ship in the U.S. this month and features a native ISO range of 100-25,600 and a 39-point AF system that includes nine cross-type points. You can hit 5 fps with continuous AF engaged during burst shooting.

The D5600 features Bluetooth Low Energy to enable automatic photo transfers between the camera and a mobile device (a technology Nikon dubs SnapBridge). SnapBridge can also initiate Wi-Fi transfers of video files and automatically upload transferred still photos from your smartphone to Nikon’s Image Space online photo service (uploaded images will be 2-megapixel resolution).

Rounding out the D5600 features you’ll find:

• a 3.2-inch touchscreen vari-angle display
• 1/4000 sec. top shutter speed
• AF sensitivity to -1 EV
• built-in flash
• full HD/60p video recording
• time-lapse mode
• Wi-Fi

The D5600 will set you back $700 for the body or $800 with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens. It will also be available in a two-lens kit option, including the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lenses, for $1,150. Finally, you can buy a kit with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens for $1,200.

COOLPIX W100

If you’re in the market for a budget-friendly waterproof compact, Nikon’s new W100 ($160, pictured in the gallery above) may fit the bill. It’s waterproof to a depth of 10 meters, can survive falls from up to 1.8 meters and is freeze proof. You’ll get a 13-megapixel sensor, full HD video recording, SnapBridge and a 3x optical zoom lens.

COOLPIX A300

This diminutive point-and-shoot boasts a 20-megapixel sensor and an 8x optical zoom lens with VR good for up to 3 stops of correction. You’ll be able to focus on subjects as close as 2cm from the front of the lens, record full HD videos and enjoy wireless, automated image transfers with SnapBridge functionality.

The A300 will set you back $130.
