When it comes to covering a wedding, not a minute goes to waste, even those short ones in between moments and transitions of the day. Portland, Oregon, photographer Dylan M Howell (an Rf 30 Rising Star in 2014 who also shot that issue’s cover) took heed of that prudence and filled the extra minutes between this bride’s first look and the arrival of her bridal party with some quick portraits.

“We were on top of a hill with no shade, but the clouds were coming in, making the light decent for 1 p.m.,” Howell says. “I really wanted to show how amazing this dress was and the movement it could have, so I asked the bride to spin in circles like a ballerina. I love asking clients to do little activities like this throughout the day—they always get huge smiles on their faces, and it’s way more fun than staring at me while I take a serious portrait.”

(Shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a 35mm f/1.4L lens at f/1.8, 1/1600th of a second and ISO 100.)
