Wedding Photographers Cover Fashion Week

This week, Jason Groupp and I had coffee with three wedding photographers who were in town covering the always-aspirational #NYFW. Loving this! Fashion photography is a huge inspiration in my daily life because it combines photojournalism, fine art and beauty, so when I see it reflected in wedding photography, I perk up a little.

Not only does street photography and being in “the pit” help hone your wedding-day snap reflexes, but as Jana Williams put it, when her (24,000) Facebook and (9,600) Instagram followers see haute couture in her various streams, her value as a wedding photographer spikes up. Check out some of the shots Jana, Mandie Haberman and Zabrina Deng captured this week. Anyone else cover cover fashion photography as a tool in your wedding work?

Happy Valentines Day!

We are all about hearts this year, and today is a day of celebrating the heart. Valentine’s day, as most of us know is a day in which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering sweet treats, and of course sending greeting cards.

Although widely celebrated across the world, it’s origins are of Christian descent. Doing a little homework this morning, I did not know that Saint Valentine was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry.  Imprisoned under the Roman Empire he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you guys!  I’m sure you won’t find it surprising that I found a new tie to celebrate the occasion.

Historical color photographs of Paris make us say “OUI.”

As an editor for a photography magazine, I often see images described as “breathtaking” and “captivating,” and the meanings can get diluted. But when I see stuff like this: color photographs of Paris in the 1900s—YOWZA! The whole series is a bodily experience. It’s like eating a really delicious filet mignon with your eyes.

My favorites? A man in the doorway of a shop on Rue du Montparnasse:

A girl selling flowers at 53 rue Cambon in 1918:

And this unreal-looking interior of the Exposition au Grand Palais in 1909.

These images remind us about the origins of photography itself—recording a moment in history and making it eternal. And the fact that they’re in color! Sacrebleu! Wouldn’t it be amazing to live during that era, to be a pioneer of photography? What are your favorite historical eras captured on film?

The importance of a photograph.

Unfortunately, my dad passed away a little over 10 years ago and we really miss him. My dad, Barry, was only 60 years old and was taken from us too soon. As a tribute to him on his birthday today, I wanted to share my favorite photo of him—taken by Bob Gruen. At the time (circa 1974), my dad and Bob were on tour with the glam rock band, The New York Dolls (my dad working as their sound man). For those of you not familiar with Bob’s work—he is a legend in rock n’ roll photography, and is probably most famous for his portrait of John Lennon with the New York City T-shirt and sunglasses. If I remember the story correctly, Bob actually took off his shirt and gave it to John to put on!
My pop really enjoyed hanging out with him and always had great stories about that trip to Hollywood. One of the reasons I like this photo so much (besides the fact it is sooo funny) is that it was one of my dad’s happiest times in his life. Shortly after this trip, he stopped doing sound work and went back to his job as an electrician with Local #3 in New York. He realized that being “on the road” for 9 months out of the year was not going to work for him and his family, but I think my dad always wondered what would have happened if he kept going.
So this picture also serves as inspiration for me to work hard and to appreciate how lucky I am to do what I love, and now in my new role to help others do what they love. Anyway, when I was going through my pop’s things 10 years ago I found this picture; unfortunately it had gotten wet and was totally ruined! I was so sad, but figured I would try to find Bob and see if by any chance he still had the negative. I emailed Bob and two days later he emailed me back saying not only did he find the negative, but he had made me some prints! I could not believe it! He was able to pull out a negative from a random shot of my Dad (a soundman) from 1974! 30 years later! Thank you so much Bob—you have no idea how happy this made me. Happy birthday Pop, we miss you.

Finding our way… big city inspiration

Today, we lay to rest one of  New York’s icons, Ed Koch. I was just a kid when he was mayor, but of all the leaders we’ve had over the years, he is one that always stuck out. I remember it was a treat when I could stay up late to watch him on Saturday Night Live, and his famous tag line “How’m I doing?!” is legendary.  Sen. Charles Schumer says Ed Koch lived and breathed New York City with “every atom in his body.”  NYC was going through tough times during his tenure, and he helped bring the Big Apple  back from near ruins. Crime and graffiti were commonplace, and with his brash and brutal style, he battled to bring about one of the greatest comebacks in history. Not everyone liked him, but everyone appreciated his passion. His work ethic has inspired me, and he’ll be missed.

As we approach WPPI, we’re planning our classes and looking forward to meeting some of the people who inspire us.  I think it’s important to find those whose messages resonate within us, but also important to carve our own paths. Although I thought Koch’s bullish style often got him in more trouble than it may have been worth, I can emulate the passion he brought to his job. Rest in peace Mr. Koch, thank you for all you’ve done!

I’m sure I’m not the only one planning on picking up one of his books soon -

I AM ALIVE.

Sue Bryce.  My gosh, what can I say about her without sounding like I’m a gushing teenager?  Sorry, I can’t!

Two years ago we had lunch together when she was visiting NYC.  I’ve been lucky to have so many people stop by on their visits through NYC.  Lunch with Sue was a treat!  I remember thinking to myself as she eloquently spoke across the table that she is destined for greatness.  I was a fan of her work even then; her ability to make women feel at ease is a gift, and her latest project is a testament to that.

Please take the time to visit her page and watch this video below.  I lost my Pop to Cancer 6 years ago, it was a grueling experience I’ll never forget.  Thank you Jill for being so brave, and sharing your story with us.  Thank you Sue for being you.
